The Kurukshetra University was established in 1956 as a unitary residential University and its foundation stone was laid by late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.

However, Kurukshetra University is located in the holy city of Kurukshetra, land of the historical battle of ‘Mahabharata’ and the great message of Bhagwad Gita, its campus is situated on the western bank of Brahm Sarover (the holy tank) and extends over an area of over 400 acres.

In fact, Kurukshetra University starting with only the Department of Sanskrit, it has grown into a multi-faculty University as one of the premier centers for advanced study and research in the region.

Moreover, the Kurukshetra University Library began in Kalsia House with Sanskrit books and later on continues to be in two places i.e the main library in the College of Education and Indic Studies Section in the top floor of the Administrative Block.

However, the foundation date of the present building of Kurukshetra University is 17th July 1967.

That is by the then Chief Minister Rao Virender Singh and ultimately library shift in its new building on July 18, 1972.

Having plinth area 33000 Sq ft in three stories’ Later on during 1984-85 due to a shortage of space the building was extended and presently has plinth area 49230 sq. ft.

Further, in order to provide adequate reading space, Kurukshetra University has given an extension of  57500 sq ft. the area in the golden jubilee year of the university.

So, this reading area is  Golden Jubilee Reading Hall. After adding this library has an area of 1,06,730 sq ft. Library reading capacity has increased from 470 users to 1270 users. So, the library has 1270 reading seat capacity.
